Adsorption of Cationic and Anionic Surfactants on Calcium Oxalates
The adsorption of cationic and anionic surfactants on calcium oxalate hydrates is studied as a function of surfactant concentration. The experiments were performed in the solutions of ionic strength, pH, temperature and reactant concentrations close to those prevailing in urines. The surfactant adsorption isotherms show a typical two-stage process. The results are analyzed by a model in which the first stage of adsorption corresponds to the monolayer coverage on the surface of calcium oxalate and the second stage appears to involve formation of small surface aggregates through hydrophobic interactions. The validity of this model has been checked by treating the isotherms in the form of an general adsorption isotherm equation for surfactant.
