A preliminary investigation of phytoplankton of karstic pools (Dugi otok island, Croatia)

Phytoplankton in the karstic pools of Croatian islands have not been investigated in recent times. Phytoplankton and environmental conditions were investigated in three karstic pools on Dugi Otok island (Dalmatia). The pools are small (ca 20 m2), shallow (max. depth 2 m), and have bottoms covered with charophytes and vascular plants. Physico-chemical and phytoplankton analyses were performed using standard limnological techniques. Eight-five taxa of net phytoplankton belonging to four main divisions were recorded. These included 22 Cyanophyceae, 14 Chlorophyceae, 17 Charophyceae, 15 Euglenophyceae, and 17 Bacilariophyceae. Low species richness is owed to predominance of a few taxa of Cyanophyceae. Despite their similar physico-chemical regimes, the pools had different phytoplankton communities. Data presented here contribute base-line information essential in evaluating changes in the biotopes of the Croatian islands. Conservation of these pools is one way to preserve the overall biodiversity of karstic islands.
