Extrusion dies are subjected to fluctuating loads and high temperatures during one extrusion stroke. Therefore great attention must be paid to ensure that the tooling set is both strong enought to withstand these loads, and rigid enought to minimize deflection. This appearance could be very significant in weld-pocket dies for extrusion of wide thin-walled solid sections. Detailed stress analysis that requires three-dimensional sophisticated Finite Element Method (FEM) programs should be involved in weld-pocket dies design. A very important factor in weld-pocket die design is the shape of the weld pocket. This paper shows the results of numerical simulation of behavior of various weld-pocket dies durin extrusion of thin-walled solid sections. In this simulation, the shape of weld pocket was taken as an influence variable. Results obtained by such simulations could be useful for the die designer. |
