"Dictionaries methode": Tradition and the Electronic Text

The presentation is concerned with the role of electronic dictionaries in linguistic, literary and cultural studies. The Croatian cultural context, with its many dictionaries from the early modern period on, provides an excellent opportunity for a renewed consideration of what is gained in making old texts, especially old dictionaries, easily available in their "original" form. Dictionaries can be seen as repositories of words and concepts -- and therefore knowledge -- that a certain culture records in order to take stock of its own situation as much as that of a foreign culture (in the case of bilingual or multilingual dictionaries). They represent an often neglected source of information about the multifaceted past into which we project our sense of identity and continuity and on the basis of which we construct and reconstruct our ideas of the present.
