Gancyclovir therapy in children with cytomegalovirus infection-our experience
A total of seventeen children treated at the University Hospital for Infectious Diseases "Dr. Fran Mihaljevic", Zagreb, Croatia from 1998 till 2003 are presented. In all patients PCR-CMV proved positive in blood. Treated children were divided into two groups: those with severe illnesses with neurological symptoms dominating, and those with less severe illnesses with hepatitis dominating. In all patients gancycylovir therapy was administered lasting from three days to six weeks. Treatment outcome in children with sepsis syndrome and milder forms of disease was favourable, while in children with severe neurological symptoms the outcome was less favourable. PCR was major laboratory marker of treatment efficacy. Observed adverse events were unremarkable. CONCLUSION: A short-term favourable effect of gancycylovir therapy was confirmed. Far-reaching advantages and disadvantages still remain unknown, perhaps even indications for initiation and duration of treatment.
