Proud to be Croat: Examples of Croatian identity through music
Using few examples I will show different ideas of presenting Croatian identity: 1. tambura ensembles played folklike music and were very popular on the beginning of the 1990s ; 2. ethnomovement (Croatian equivalent for world music) in the same 1990s who played folk melodies in new arrangements ; and 3. pop singer Thompson whose popularity was on the top in year 2002. His newly composed songs expressed his devotion to Croatia. Using analysis of sound and video materials I will try to present the ideas of the musicians about what the 'real' Croatian music is, and their communication with the audience. Also I will try to see in which way their music evolved today, and do they still feel the need to show themselves, the Croatian folk and to the world 'our' Croatian Identity through music or they play nowadays in line with the rules of the world mass media?
