Sažetak:
Any quantitative investigation of the human brain structural elements, e.g. determination of the total number of neurons/glial cells/synapses/receptors in a given brain region must first address the following questions: What is the best method for estimating the total number of these neural structures? What are the validity and the expected precision of the obtained data? What precision must the estimates attain with respect to the scientific question? The theorethical background of modern stereological methods which are used in neuroscientific research, such as optical and physical disector, optical fractionator and nucleator were given. The second part of the talk included practical issues and demonstrations of the above mentioned methods using the StereoInvestigator software (MicroBrightField, Williston, USA) and microscope-computer interface system.
