Wind Variability and Wind Energy Potential Estimation in Croatia
The paper discusses the importance of wind measurement period length for the wind power estimation. Due to complex terrain features in Croatia only small number of anemographic locations could be regarded as representative for a large area. The Slavonski Brod station satisfies this condition. In order to estimate the wind powers around the station the Wind Atlas and Application Programme (WAsP model) has been applied to the 5-year time series of wind data during the period 1966-1990. It is shown that the range of mean power density at Slavonski Brod was between 15 and 30 Wm-2 depending on the 5-year periods. The climatological representatives of the wind regime improve when the measurement period is extended. The results of wind measurements of a short "windy" period might indicate an unrealistic utilization of wind energy and this leads to wrong assessment of economic justification.
