Sažetak:
Results of previous studies suggest that sleep quality is largely affected by preceding day activities. Since cardiac activity parameters can be used as indicators of sleep quality, it was assumed that the patterns of changes in heart rate variability (HRV) during the night sleep after a working day and a day off would be somewhat different due to the differences in the daily activities and/or stress. The aim of this study was to compare changes in heart rate variability (HRV) during sleep after a working day and a day off. Four middle-aged medical nurses participated in this study, whose cardiac R-R intervals were twice continuously recorded for 24 hours, which included an afternoon shift, in one case, and a day off, in the other. For the purpose of this study, R-R intervals recorded during eight hours of the two sleeping periods (22.00 – 06.00 hrs) were divided into hourly periods and analysed. The mean values of R-R intervals did not show significant differences between the two periods of sleeping, while the standard deviations were lower in early morning hours after the day off. This could be seen as a normal change in this part of circadian cycle, and/or as an effect of the morning shift anticipation. Power spectral density parameters - SMI (Square Modulation Index), were calculated for low, medium and high frequencies of the two periods, where, the changes in medium frequency band after the day off indicated a period of deep sleep from 23.00 to 03.00 hours. From this time, a decrease in SMI occurred, suggesting, thus, that the normal process of waking up had started. After the working day, however, changes in SMI did not show a regular pattern, which could be interpreted as lighter sleeping, and/or poorer quality of sleep. The differences are most probably, due to the effects of the preceding day (non)activity, i.e. relaxing vs. working day. Furthermore, the HRV indices at high frequency band were mostly affected by respiration, while the low frequency, as expected, mainly reflected circadian changes in the body temperature. Generally speaking, the results of this study indicated that sleeping quality was affected by preceding day activities, while the early morning changes in the cardiac parameters could be caused by the morning shift anticipation, or by normal changes in that part of circadian cycle period.
