Linear and non-linear analyses of R-R intervals in sound rhythms exposure situations

The aim of this study was to find the effects of exposure to simple sound rhythms on participant's cardiac parameters. Experimental design was 2 x 3 within groups, factor experiment in which two levels of sound intensity (40 and 80 dB) and three levels of tempo (60, 200 and 400 BPM) of sound rhythm were used. Eleven female psychology students participated. Changes in their R-R intervals and variability parameters (standard deviations and DM indexes) indicated that the main effect of listening to sound rhythms was connected with a decrease in heartbeat variability which most probably resulted from higher mental load (Valerjev and Šimić, 2002). This study was a further analysis of the data from a previous study. Present analyses included spectral analysis (SMI indexes) and some non-linear parameters such as correlation dimension and the largest Lyapunov exponent. Decrease in SMI indexes in low and medium spectral bands occurred with more intensive sound rhythms in function of rhythm tempo increase which may point to increased stress and mental load. Spectral analysis showed no clear interference between sound and cardiac rhythm. A decrease in correlation dimension for more intensive rhythms, points out to a decrease of dimensionality of the series, which is probably the result from domination of some non-linear factors that determine dynamic system. More evidence for such an interpretation was indicated by a decrease in predictability of the system (i.e. system is more chaotic) when exposed to sound rhythms, as shown by an increase in Lyapunov exponents. Similar non-linear changes were reported in some other recent papers on mental loads.
