Wind Atlas for the Central European Countries - Austria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovak Republic and Slovenia
In the last decade the production of energy from renewable natural resources had gained more and more world-wide importance. This paper is result of a co-operation of members from the National Meteorological Services of Austria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovak Republic and Slovenia within the framework of the Central European Initiative on Meteorology working group “ Regional Studies and Climate Impacts” . A goal of the working group was to prepear the regionally representative wind climatology. The method used here for assessing the wind energy resources in Central Europe is the well known Wind Atlas Analysis and Application Program (WAsP model) which was applied for the preparation of the European Wind Atlas. The analyses was based on the 40 meteorological stations (10 stations from Austria, 9 stations from Croatia, 8 stations from Czech Republic, 4 stations from Hungary, 4 stations from Slovak Republic and 5 stations from Slovenia). The measuring sites on higher mountains are included to give a picture of height dependency of wind speed in mountain, despite the fact that these data are not reduced on behalf of orography with the Wind Atlas procedure as the others. Beside this there exists a high wind power potential in some coastal regions of Croatia depending on the orographic situation different to these in the high mountain. All this leads consequently to some heterogeneity in the used material which has to be born in mind when interpreting the present results.
