Biotechnology and Food Technology: Although classical biotechnology was introduced in Croatia more than 70 years ago. The first organized program in biotechnology was established at the department of Biotechnology at the University of Zagreb's Faculty of Technology in 1956, which later became the Faculty of Food Technology and Biotechnology in 1981. The interface between biotechnology, food technology and food processing is still under discussion in spite of the fact that the food processing industry was practicing biotechnology long before it was recognized as a distinct and revolutionary scientific discipline. Modern Croatian biotechnology research is oriented toward mutual growth with arrising new industries in order to introduce new technologies, follow up investments, monitor production, maintain product quality and open new markets. Biotechnology research is mainly carried out at the University of Zagreb and within scientific institutes founded by the government.
