The expression of growth factors in human melanomas
Human melanoma tissues contain different growth factors: EGF, NGF, IGF I, PDGF, and insulin-related molecules. These growth-promoting peptides might stimulate tumor growth by increasing the rate of DNA synthesis. NGF and EGF prolonged the survival of human melanoma cells in primary culture. Melanoma cells in vivo secreted a measurable amounts of EGF and PDGF. Our results suggest that growth factors play a role as (autocrine) growth-promoting factors in melanoma, and that some of them might be produced by the tumor cells themselves.
