The role of life goals, generative concern and attitudes toward human nature in prediction of life satisfaction among university students
The aim of this study was to examine the role of life goals, generative concern and attitudes toward human nature in prediction of student's life satisfaction. Life satisfaction represents the overall cognitive evaluation of life, through which every person evaluate his/her own life. The above mentioned variables were assessed with Satisfaction With Life Scale (SWLS (Diener et al., 1985), subscales from GOALS scale (Blmann, Brunstein, 1997) for assessing the importance of reaching following life goals: power, achievement, intimacy and altruism, Loyola Generativity Scale (McAdams, de St.Aubin, 1992), and Philosophies of Human Nature Scale (Wrightsman, 1964). The subjects in this study were 109 students from carious courses of University of Zadar (Croatia), aged 18-25. The results of multiple regression analysis show that the best predictors of life satisfaction in this sample were generative concern and trust in people (assessed with PHN subscale). Furthermore, we found that subjects who scored high on measures of generative concern, importance of life goals which were more oriented toward achievement and intimacy, and trust in people are significantly more satisfied with their lives compared to subject who scored low on these measures. The results were discussed in the context of our recent psychological project on the predictors of young people's life satisfaction.
