Sažetak:
When using various cardiac parameters as dependent variable some authors use their resting values as the reference point to which they compare the changes caused by the changes in independent variables. On many occasions it was shown that this approach was not reliable, because of the effects of various environmental variables. The aim of this study was to check the reliability and validity of the use of resting level cardiac parameters as reference points for the assessment of the effects of the independent variables. This study included 16 subjects, aged 19 to 22, whose cardiac R-R intervals were registrated on alternative hours during 24 hours. The R-R interval samples were taken in duration of one minute on each occasion. After this, every subject was left to sleep, which depth was monitored on the EEG recorder. When the subject was in the EEG delta phase (deep sleep), his cardiac R-R intervals were recorded. The comparison of the mean R-R intervals and their variability in the EEG delta phase of sleeping with the same parameters at the wake resting level showed marked differences between the two situations. Due to the fact that cardiac R-R intervals and their variability had significant circadian variations, the use of the cardiac parameters in the EEG sleep phase as the basal level (reference point) seem more logical and reliable than the resting level parameters, since the reliability of the latter changes in the course of day.
