Ethnic Entrepreneurship in Croatia - A Life Story

In the introduction the authors explain the roots of specific features of ethnic entrepreneurship in Croatia which developed in another manner than in the countries, members of the European Union, that participate in the project Ethno Generation. Fundamental differences result are the result of different social systems, capitalism and socialism, as well as of dissimilarities in economic development based on private or social ownership. Private entrepreneurship was not stimulated in the former socialist state while during the last 15 years, by privatisation of the state/social ownership and transfer to market economy, the number of labour force in small or middle entrepreneurship reached almost 800, 000 what makes 54.9 per cent in the total number of employed persons. To serve the needs of this paper the authors wanted to research the importance and role of socio-cultural networks among ethnic groups as driving forces for beginning or carrying on with business (family tradition), the degree of integration of the ethnic entrepreneurs' second generation (inclusion/exclusion) into Croatian society and what are the plans of this second generation for the future of their children (third generation). The basic division of ethnic entrepreneurs in Croatia can be made according to difference in time when a certain ethnic group appears as a holder of clearly defined entrepreneurship niche and according to difference in the composition of a certain group respectively – whether it is made up of the citizens of other ethnic affiliation who previously lived in the joint state or of foreigners. In this way the authors divide ethnic entrepreneurship into traditional (Albanians) in contrast to contemporary (Chinese). Part of the paper deals with the problems of defining and operationalizing the quality of life as a general or specific multidimensional concept as well as the use of biographic method, especially life story and life history in fields investigating various aspects of life of ethnic communities and old people linked with the group quality of life. Life stories within the method of life history can be arranged and presented in several ways. In the first model of presentation the interpretation framework would be emphasised and life story presented in an interwoven, shortened manner in connection with editorial comments and analyses. In the second one, however, the story is left to "speak for itself" with insignificant editing and interpretation. In such a way the paper describes life history (from the life course perspective) of an Albanian ethnic entrepreneur.
