CHROMATOGRAPHIC CHARACTERISATION OF DIESEL FUEL BLENDING COMPONENTS

Knowing the detailed hydrocarbon composition and distribution of aromatic hydrocarbons in the fractions obtained from various processes of oil refining used for blending of diesel fuel is very important for foreseeing the final commercial product quality. Ratio of saturated hydrocarbons and aromatic hydrocarbons has a significant influence on diesel fuel application characteristics, and content of polyaromatic hydrocarbons is defined by EN 590 European Standard, and it should not exceed 11 mass%. The aim of this research was to determine which components, from the environmental standpoint, are the most favorable for blending diesel fuels. The tested components included: light gas oil (Topping), desulphurised gas oil (HDS), kerosene (Topping), light catalytic oil (FCC). In addition, differences were observed in the PAH content of blending components depending on the feed from which they derived, the feeds themselves varying in sulphur content. Determination was carried by the method of high-performance for normal phases (NP-HPLC) with the use of a RI detector. Separation of saturates and aromatics was performed on amino modified silica column. The column shows a little affinity to saturated hydrocarbons (aliphatic and cyclic), but it shows emphasized affinity and selectivity to aromatic hydrocarbons. As a result of selectivity, aromatics were separates from the saturated, and mutually separated by clearly outstanding peaks according to the number of rings. Determination of aromatics in diesel fuels by this technique is covered by EN 12916 European Standard.
