Measurement of the spherical model of interests: The Croatian version of Personal Globe Inventory

Personal Globe Inventory (PGI) and the spherical model of interests (Tracey, 2002) have emerged recently in vocational psychology. Their most prominent characteristic is the emphasis on prestige as a relevant determinant of one's vocational choice. PGI measures 18 vocational interests differing according to the type of work and prestige. Each interest scale score is formed as a composite across three item types – activity preferences, activity competence beliefs, and occupational preferences. PGI is designed for vocational guidance purposes: on the basis of client's responses information on dominate interests and best matching occupations are presented. Personal Globe Inventory was translated into Croatian. It was administered to a sample of approximately 1600 respondents. Respondents are the pupils finishing primary school and secondary school, and students at the end of their university education. The subsamples based on age and gender were fairly equal in size. Reliability coefficients (Cronbach's alphas) are presented for each of 18 interests scale across all age subsamples. Good internal consistency of all scales in all sub samples was obtained. As validity indices, the means across different subsamples are compared. Different interests depending on age and field of education support expected construct validity of the Croatian version of PGI. As the structural validity of the Croatian version of PGI is still being analysed, this preliminary reliability and the validity estimates indicate that the Croatian version of PGI has retained its merit as a powerful tool for the interest assessment.
