Mediation and moderation effects in the research of stress, coping and health outcomes

One of the main aims of the psychological research of the process of stress is the investigation of the effects of psychosocial variables such as coping with stress, personality trats, cognitive appraisals and perceived stress on health outcomes. The answer to the question of how relevant psychosocial variables influence health outcomes in the processs of stress is connected also to the understanding of the methods by which these realtionshiops are tested. Namely, there are three different models to be find in the this domain. He first one tests direct effects of the psychosocial variables on health outcomes, the second one assumes that the effects of the selected variables can be mediated through some other variables, and the third one that they could be moderated by some third variable. However, most commonly only one of the models is tested in a study, and they are rarely compared. The results of several studies investigating direct and medating effects of the coping styles on various health outcomes (physical symptoms, moods and satisfaction with coping), as well as mediating and moderating effects of personality traits or perceived stress in the relationship between coping and outcomes will be presented. Also, it will be discussed when moderating or mediating effects are to be tested, their position in the models, and what are the meanings of the significant effects of the moderating or mediating variable in the model.
