The Origin and Evolution of Dalmatian and Relation with Other Croatian Native Breeds of Dogs

While researching metabolism purin bases of istrian hound (Labura, 1992), autochthonous Croatian breed from the eastern Adriatic coast (Istria, Dalmatia, islands of Dalmatia), we have observed identity with metabolism of purin bases of a Dalmatians, which is essentially different from already researched breeds (Bauer, 1999). It has been known for a long time that this specific metabolism purin bases of Dalmatians proceeds similarly to a humans (Benedict, 1916-17, Trimble and Keeler, 1938). Final product of human proteins breakdown, consequently of a Dalmatian dogs, is uric acid, extracted by urine. The other dogs have ability to breakdown uric acid further step more, to alantoin, also eliminated by urine. Cause to this phenomenon and its wide circulation in other breeds has been subject of research for many scientists (Kessler et al., 1959, Duncan et al., 1967, Yú et al., 1971, Duncan and Curtis, 1971, Mazué et al., 1977, Giesecke i Tiemeyer, 1984, Briggs and Harley, 1985, Briggs and Harley, 1986, Sorenson and Ling, 1993, Matsumoto et al., 1995, Ling et al., 1997). Conclusion based upon their research is that concentration of uric acid in serum is similar to humans only at Dalmatians and its closest relatives and that this characteristic is recessive which becomes prominent only at relatives of Dalmatians which carry this characteristic as homozygotes (Stubičan, 1981, Sorenson i Ling, 1993a). Research of istrian hound shows the same way of purin bases breakdown as Dalmatians. Upon this basis it is considered to be relative to Dalmatians. At the same time, at the same place, on a very small range, a group of sight hound body-shaped dogs, so called old Croatian sight hound “ starohrvatski hrt” (Bauer, 1994), which also have had been subject to research of acid uricum concentration, but with not clear results. Research had been suddenly stopped by extinction of that breed, owing to existing “ Low of hunting” in Yugoslavia and final devastation of their domicile area during war in nineties). Within this research, genetic analysis of hair colors by Willis (1984) has been made which showed that all of these three different breeds have the same basic genetic formula for colors. As this newly discovered “ starohrvatski” hrt according to experience so far is remainder of Celtic sight hounds which inhabited this area and whose figures were shown on metal coins from 500 B.C. found in this area (Ash, 1933 ; Levrier, 1983), it is thought that this part of Mediterranean-Dalmatian coast of Adriatic sea and part of Balkan Peninsula is source of particular types of breeds, spreaded from this area, all over the Europe throughout the history. These knowledge were motive for trying to collect all relevant data which point out to the origin of Dalmatians, its general appearances and working intention in the course of histories well as influence of “ old croatian genome - starohrvatskog genoma” to a creation or developing of modern breeds in Europe.
