Social perception of PTSD in soldiers
The important role of social environment in posttrauma process is a common notion in the literature about PTSD. Yet, there is a lack of empirical evidence about processess underlying different social reactions toward persons with PTSD. An attributional perspective is often used to explain the negative reactions at the first place, but the very concept of PTSD has been rarely used so far to test the predictions of attribution theory as well. This paper presents some results of a wider research that was carried out on several groups of students at the University of Mostar with the aim to analyze evaluative implications of PTSD label and presenting symptoms on overall impression about the target person. The findings supported predictions derived from attribution theory, which attests to usefulness of this concept in the attribution theory research area. Since the target person was presented as having problems in actual functioning because of some combat experiences, the results are of practical importance primarily when considering social reactions toward a (ex)soldier with PTSD.
