Emissioin and Transformation of Lead, Zinc and Cadmium Aerosols in the Environment of a Lead Smeltery
The concentrations of lead, zinc and cadmium have been monitored since 1970. In 1978 efficient bag filters were installed to remove dust from the flue gases. Biological indicators of population exposure to lead showd progressive normalization, but with a tendency to become steady at a level slightly higher than normal. In order to assess the extent of soil concentration as the main factor of continuous general exposure, the content of metallic ions was measured in soil samples collected at eleven sites in polluted and at one site in a control area over a five year period. The study evaluated physical-chemical characteristics of the soil, solubility of metal compounds and the behaviour of metallic ions (Pb, Zn and Cd) in contact with soil samples.
