Severity of allergic rhinits and health related quality of life in children

Health related quality of life (HRQoL) measurement has become standard for therapy control and research in allergic rhinitis (AR). The aim of this study was to determine the effect of severity and co morbidity of AR on HRQoL . Methods: In ARIA types of AR intermittent AR is defined as experiencing symptoms for <4 days/week or <4 consecutive weeks. Persistent AR is termed as symptoms occurring for more than 4 days/week and more than 4 consecutive weeks. Additionally, a severity scale of mild to moderate-severe was included in the revised classification. We evaluated HRQoL in 87 children with allergic rhinitis aged 7-18 years (mean, 11.46 years) This study used Paediatric Rhinoconjutivitis Quality of Life Questionnaire (PRQLQ) (7-12 years)and Adolescent Paediatric Rhinoconjutivitis Quality of Life Questionnaire (AdolRQLQ) with scores range from 1 to 7. The relations between HRQoL and severity of allergic rhinitis were tested with ANOVA test. Results: 87 children completed test (50 PRQLQ, 37 AdolRQLQ). 24 were classify as mild intermittent, 27 as moderate or severe intermittent, 21 mild persistent and 15 as moderate or severe persistent. In this sample 33 children had only diagnosed AR, 43 had AR in co morbidity with asthma, 11 children had AR, asthma and atopic dermatitis. The results show that subjects with persistent AR experienced higher discomfort and seek medical attention for their condition more often. Resultates show that children with persistent AR have higher scores on symptoms and emotional domains and overall QOL score than children with inttermitetnt AR. Conclusion: Allergic rhinitis leads to an impairment of quality of life, depending on the severity of the disease. Today, quality of life measurement is standard in allergic rhinitis. The registration of comorbid conditions and of psychological factors influencing quality of life measurement remains a central problem.
