Sažetak:
Hantaviruses (HV) cause an important human illness, hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS). Clinically, HFRS is manifested mainly by fever, variable degrees of circulatory failure, hemorrhate and renal failure, with additional symptoms from other organs and systems. Several studies support the view that HFRS is an immune disease with thrombocytopenia and vascular dysfunction as the central physiological alterations. Still, little is known about the immunopathogenesis of HFRS. This report is an attempt to indicate the possible immune mechanisms and analyze the elements (e.g. endothelial cells, monocytes/macrophages, platelets, possible professional antigen-presenting cells, T cells, B cells, antibodies, immune complexes, cytokines, chemokines and other mediators of inflammation) which could play a role in HFRS immunopathogenesis. Still, many gaps remain in our understanding of the network of immunological and pathological changes that occur. Further studies on the immunopathogenicity of HFRS should be undertaken, as such knowledge would be useful for the production of effective vaccines and antiviral agents against HTV.
