Deterioration of Historical Buildings - Case Study: Parish Church in Marija Bistrica
Experiences in many repair construction projects have shown that the results of the old buildings’ façade repair are not always satisfying and that new repair must be performed after a few years, though the target service life of the repair was planned to be thirty to fifty years. The lack of knowledge about the most appropriate and lasting repair method can result in unexpected expenses. For economical as well as aesthetic and safety reasons, it is essential to perform repair that would result in increase of service life of the repaired building. The main principle of the long life repair technology is that the reason for deterioration are identified and eliminated during the repair process. In this paper inspection of façade of main church in Croatian National Sanctum in Marija Bistrica is presented. During inspection visual survey and physical and mechanical testing of materials, built in the façade, have been performed. Based on the results of condition survey some significant conclusions can be withdrawn for the future choice of repair method. Problems with façade deterioration detected during the inspection are discussed as well.
