X-ray diffraction and quality control of temporary protection of seamless steel tubing
During storage and/or exploitation seamless steel tubes are exposed to a risk of corrosion. To reduce the risk, after preparation the tubing surface is covered with a thin coating for temporary protection. The coating quickly dries up and wears off leaving the surface unevenly protected. To find out the reason for this the method of X-ray diffraction in combination with scanning electron microscopy was used. Model samples were prepared from a seamless steel tube before and after heat treatment of the tube surface. Results of investigation showed the tube surface to have been evenly covered by the protective coating only in the samples that exhibited homogeneous scale composition at all measuring sites and had low values of standard deviation coefficients.
