Hemochromatosis gene mutations in patients with alcoholic cirrhosis
We have investigated the contribution of genetic polymorphisms in the hemochromatosis gene to susceptibility for alcoholic liver disease in Croatian and Slovenian patients. The genotypes of alcoholics with and without cirrhosis, and healthy controls for the polymorphisms C282Y, H63D, and S65C suggested that C282Y and S65C mutations were not associated to the risk of developing alcoholic cirrhosis in our populations, while the frequency of H63D heterozygotes was significantly higher (P=0.0019) in patients with alcoholic cirrhosis (31.98%) than in healthy controls (19.14%).
