Sažetak:
Previous research in the field of affect measurement pointed out that response formats exert a significant influence on affect ratings altering their underlying structure and its properties (e.g. Russell & Carroll, 1999 ; Warr, Barter & Brownbridge, 1983 ; Watson, 1988). Watson and Tellegen (1999) noted that this problem represents a relatively controversial and understudied issue. In the light of this issue structural/psychometric properties of a new scale for measuring positive and negative affect are compared relative to various response formats. Three formats of the positive and negative affect measure were administered to 240 psychology students at the University of Zagreb. Participants completed the positive and negative affect measure using: (a) a dichotomous format (yes – no) indicating, for each emotional state, if they felt this way during the past week, (b) a 5-point Likert-type response format (ranging from not at all to very much) indicating the extent to which they experienced each emotional state during the past week, and (c) a 5-point Likert-type frequency response format (ranging from none of the time to most of the time) indicating what proportion of time in the past week they experienced each emotional state. Internal consistency, bipolarity and structure robustness of the positive and negative affect scales were examined and compared across different response formats.
