Separating person- and situation-specific components in the measurement of institutional psychosocial climate

Latent state-trait theory (LST ; e.g. Deinzer et al., 1995 ; Steyer, 2003) as an extension of the classical psychometric test theory was built on an idea that the measurement of any psychological attribute is shaped not only by stable individual or trait component but also by systematic albeit unstable situation-related influences. Following the assumptions of the LST theory, the study examines the degree to which variations in institutional psychosocial climate measures are due to individual dispositions and/or to occasion-related factors. Te concept of psychosocial climate is meant to reflect the attributes of a perceived psychosocial environment. Thus, it is by definition the result of joint influences of an individual’ s cognitive or appraisal processes on the one hand, and the objective environmental and/or situational characteristics, on the other hand. Several single-construct latent state-trait models were tested against the data on psychosocial climate gathered on the sample of 421 basic military trainees on two occasions five weeks apart. The restrictive versions of the latent state-trait models with method factors proved to fit the data best for the two latent constructs of perceived climate. Parameter estimates obtained point to higher consistency compared to the occasion specificity coefficients of the psychosocial climate variables. The portions of variances attributable to occasion and/or interaction effects varied, however, with a point of measurement and the facet of psychosocial climate examined.
