137Cs in air and radioactive fallout in Zagreb after chornobyl accident

Investigations of radiocaesium that had been introduced into the atmosphere by atmospheric nuclear weapons tests have been carried out in the Institute for Medical Research and Occupational Health since 1965 in fallout and from 1986 in air. In this paper are presented investigations of radiocaesium activity concentrations in air and fallout in the city of Zagreb for the period after the Chornobyl nuclear accident that occurred in April 1986. An exponential decline of radioactivity in environmental samples followed the nuclear moratorium in early 1960s. However, by the nuclear accident in Chornobyl large amounts of radiocaesium were again released to the atmosphere. In environmental samples was for the first time detected also 134Cs, that is, for physical reasons, not produced in the nuclear weapons tests in any significant quantities. The residence time of 137Cs in air and fallout for the post-Chornobyl period has been calculated to be 1.0 and 0.9 years respectively. 137Cs deposition velocity has been calculated to be 3.5×10-4 ms-1 for the period 1986 -1990 and 4.1×10-3 ms-1 for the period 1991 - 2004. The 134Cs : 137Cs activity ratio, in spite of some fluctuations, is similar as it has been found to be in other environmental samples in Croatia, as well as all over Europe. Therefore, it can be argued that these two radioisotopes have undergone no selective removal in transit between the accident site at Chornobyl and sampling sites in Croatia, as their activity ratio has not been altered.
