Psychosocial adjustment of preschool children: effect of parental understanding of own and children's emotions

The goal of this investigation is to examines the psychosocial adjustment of preschool children from 3 to 7 years old and the relationship different indicators of this adjustment. The present study examines the contribution of parental meta-emotion and the child's temperament to the child's psychosocial adjustment. The investigation included 506 children (265 girls and 241 boys) aged between three and seven, enrolled at kindergartens and their parents and kindergartens teachers. The variables investigated were measured using newly devised questionnaires as well as well - known questionnaires. The results shows that children’ s understanding of emotions is better among older children who have more developed non-verbal intellectual capabilities. Children who engage in more aggressive behaviour are boys with more surgency and less effortful control whose mothers have lower levels of education. Children who engage in more prosocial behaviour are older children and girls with more effortful control. With regard to parental meta-emotion mothers' awareness of their own and children's emotions were shown to influence children's internalizing and externalizing problems indirectly, through fathers's awareness of their own and children's negative emotions.
