Monitoring the 2003-2004 meteorological drought over Pannonian part of Croatia
In this article, the 2003-2004 meteorological drought in the Pannonian part of Croatia is analyzed using the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) at time scales of 1, 3, 6 and 12 months at 32 stations. The distribution of monthly precipitation amounts for each rain gauge is modeled by gamma distribution. The alpha and beta parameters of the gamma distribution are estimated from monthly precipitation totals from January 1961 to December 1990. A series of maps are used to illustrate how the SPI would have assisted in detecting the onset of the drought and monitor its progression. Return periods of magnitude, duration and intensity of meteorological drought 2003 2004 at 3, 6 and 12 month time scales at station Zagreb-Grič (Croatia) are also examined using historical data for magnitude, duration and intensity of meteorological droughts from 20th century.
