Psychomotor development of pubertal children (11 to 15 years of age) parallels morphology

A new method for assessing psychomotor abilities in pubertal children is described. Normative values and quartiles are presented from 273 children aged 11-15. Significant improvement with age is noted for all time related variables in both sexes. The well known delay of physical pubertal spurt in boys when compared to girls is also noticed in psychomotor skills. The improvement in test performance precedes the age of maximum growth spurt, most elegantly demonstrated in the parameter minimal time (MT). Improvement is also associated with a marked decrease of total ballast (TB) which is a measure of resistance against distracting influences. The parameter total error (TE) also assesed in the test is independent of age. This new test provides a reliable new measure for assessing psychomotor abilities, expanding our tools to investigate the human being with both physical and psychomotor aspects.
