Sažetak:
A number of recent studies have demonstrated the association of serum gamma glutamyltransferase (GGT) with atherosclerotic disease and have strongly suggested that GGT activities even within its reference intervals might be an early marker of oxidative stress. It is leaked into the serum, possible as a result of normal cell turnerover and cellular stresses. The aim of this study was to examine the association of the serum GGT and biochemical cerebrovascular risk factors which have antioxidant properties including total antioxidant status (TAS), paraoxonase activity, total bilirubin, albumin and urate. The study comprised 119 patients mean age of 65 years (range 40-83 years) with stenosis of extracranial cerebral arteries, established angiographically. The control group consisted of 90 apparently healthy individuals mean age of 61 years (range 44-82 years), with normal cerebral arteries on ultrasound examination. All measurements were performed on the Olympus AU 600 analyzer using Olympus reagents and standardised laboratory methods. In the both studied groups the GGT activities were within reference intervals produced for Croatian population with no significant difference between controls and patients with cerebrovascular stenosis (median values 19 U/L versus 22 U/L ; (p=0, 07). There were no statistically significant relationships between GGT activity and TAS, paraoxonase activity, total bilirubin and albumin in the both studied groups. The positive association between GGT and concentrations of urate was observed in the control group (r=0, 435 ; p<0, 05) and in the group of cerebrovascular stenosis (r=0, 291 ; p<0, 05).
