The assessment of Parental Support among Child Athletes and their Parents.

Parental support is an important correlate of youth sport engagement (Brustard, 1996 ; Trost et al., 2003 ; Woolgar i Power, 1993). In this research the problem of perceiving the support by different members of family is approached. The sample of this research consists of 68 boys aged 8 to 16 years, their mothers (n=67) and their fathers (n= 64). The boys included in the sample were the members of handball (n=29) and basketball (n=39) sport clubs, training regularly at least two times a week in the last year. The assessment of parental support was done by Parental Care in Sport Scale (Bosnar, 2003) with comparable versions for parents and children. As first, the scale was given to parent who brought the child to training. At the same occasion the parental consent to measure their children was asked. Then, present parent (if not single) was asked to take a copy of scale to other parent to fill it at home, and was asked not to help the spouse. Children athletes completed the scale after training, at club. Descriptive statistics show the decrease of support by age of athlete and greater support to basketball players than to handball players. Next, the component analysis was applied. The projection of scale items on the first principle axis was obtained for mothers, fathers and children separately. The vectors were compared by Tucker's coefficients of congruence. The values of congruence coefficients are high, 0.981 and 0.976 for young athletes' and mothers' and fathers' vectors, respectively. Congruence coefficient of parents' vectors values 0.976. The results indicate high concordance of parental support perception of all members of family.
