Discriminant analysis of sport interests in young male and female urban adolescents
Three samples of secondary school graduates have been asked to evaluate their preference of 52 sports on five-point scale. The first sample consists of 1040 male and 994 female subjects, the second has 1165 male and 952 female, and the third has 1122 male and 1168 female subjects. The list of sports includes acrobatics, aerobics, aeronautics, rock climbing, archery, athletics, auto-moto sports, badminton, baseball, basketball, bodybuilding, bowls, box, canoeing, cycling, dance, diving, equestrian, fencing, field hokey, football, handball, ice hokey, judo, karate, mountaineering, orienteering, parachuting, pin bowling, rhythmic gymnastics, roller skating, rowing, rugby, schooting, scuba diving, skating, skiing, sledging, spear-fishing, sports fishing, sports gymnastics, surfing, swimming, synchronized swimming, table tennis, taekwondo, tennis, volleyball, water skiing, waterpolo, weightlifting and wrestling. Three canonical discriminant analyses were conducted and results were compared. Coefficients of canonical discrimination are very high and significant, 0.819, 0.821, and 0.822 respectively. The positions of centroids on discriminant functions are oriented on positive side for females and on negative side for males. Discriminant functions have very similar definition in all three analyses. They are defined by aerobics, dance, rhythmic gymnastic, roller scatting, badminton, synchronized swimming, equestrian, volleyball and ice scatting at the positive side, and football, moto-sport, ice hockey, box, waterpolo, sport fishing, basketball, wrestling and rugby. Coefficients of congruence of structures of discriminant functions are all exceeding 0.96, what shows very high consistence of obtained results. Spearman's rank correlation of structural coefficients between discriminant functions in fist and second analysis is 0.981, between first and third analysis is 0.970, and between second and third analysis is 0.966, what also confirms high congruence and consistence of obtained structures of discriminant functions.
