Gender History in the Statutes of the East Adriatic Communes

The MA thesis analyses selected medieval Adriatic Statutes from the position of microhistory, family and gender history. That inputs a new inside and treatment in the use and reconsideration of traditional historical sources. The findings are set within broader Mediterranean situation and more anthropological literature is used to illuminate the topic. The thesis consists of four chapters. The introductory chapter gives a theoretical background and literature review on volumes that deal with Mediterranean family models and gender relations, as well as Croatian literature on Statutes and the history of the family. It also consists of a short history of East Adriatic and broader Mediterranean context in terms of geographic, cultural and social settings. Furthermore, there is a description of the sources, with remarks about its specificity as historical sources. The first chapter focuses on the act of marriage framed with the concepts developed by different instances (Church, communes) and with an analysis of proscriptions that regulate entering marriage with a special concern for the practice and meaning of marriage transactions. The second chapter analyses gender relations in family. The family structure is considered based on the principles of marital property relationships and other relevant criteria such as the emancipation of children. Moreover, the analysis of the work of women is incorporated in this section. The third chapter analyses regulations with regards to inheritance and widowhood. Not before connecting the meaning and concepts that affected entering marriage, the mentioned themes might be framed within comprehensive discussion. The fourth chapter follows Statute"s regulations concerning women"s body and sexuality and destinies of women who deviated from social order and proclaimed norms. The material is framed with some topics from anthropological literature, namely private and public dichotomy and shame and honor construct. By focusing the analysis on the East Adriatic, some differences become more obvious and relevant namely between Istria and Dalmatia. Although the Statutes were used in historical studies (mostly by legal historians), the thesis reveals some new insights and inspirations by introducing anthropological and Mediterranean concepts.
