Obese individuals are at increased risk for developing a myriad of medical, psychological, and behavioural problems. Medical conditions associated with obesity include insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes mellitus, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, cardiovascular disease, stroke, pulmonary hypertension, sleep apnea, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, gallbladder disease, hyperuricemia and gout, osteoarthritis, and certain types of cancer. Reducing weight by as little as 5% to 10% can reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and associated comorbidities. The goal of any antiobesity therapy is not only weight reduction, but also a reduction in the disability and morbidity associated with obesity, thus leading to an increase in a patient’ s quality of life. Healthy lifestyle changes, including a reduction in caloric intake and an increase in physical activity, remain a mainstay of obesity therapy and should be incorporated into all weight-loss regimens. Although some psychological and psychopathologic elements have been investigated in obesity, only a few studies have dealt with anger management in obese patients. The aim of this study was to evaluate the affective states (depression and anxiety) and anger in obese subjects seeking balloon treatment and to determine whether an association exists among the anger expression levels and mood state in these obese patients. Anxiety showed a significant correlation with depression, anger expression, BMI, systolic, and diastolic blood pressure. These relationships indicate that the greater degree of anxiety, the greater is the participant's depression and anger expression. These patients have higher BMI and blood pressure. From a therapeutic viewpoint, depression, impulsivity, and anger should become targets for the psychologist in the treatment and case management of obese patients. Individuals suffering from obesity, also patients which decided to put intragastric balloons, should benefit from a therapeutic network, such as that used for the management of other eating disorders, including a dietary approach, individual or group psychotherapy, particularly cognitive-behavioural therapy and specific psychopharmacologic treatment in those with more severe depression, impulsivity, and anger.
