Relation between general and disease-specific health related quality of life of patients with inflammatory bowel disease

Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis are chronic, reccurent diseases which exert major effects on patients' quality of life. Therefore the treatment must focus on prevention of complications, maintenance of remission, and improvement and perseveration of quality of life. There is considerable evidence that patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) have impaired health related quality of life (HRQOL) compared with healthy controls in physical, social and emotional function. The primary aim of this study was to investigate the relation between general and disease-specific health related quality of life of patients with IBD. The secondary aim was to compare general and specific HRQOL of patients with Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis as well as of women and men with this condition. Participants were 69 outpatients of the Gastroenterology Department, Clinical Hospital Centre Rijeka, with ulcerative colitis (N=38) and Crohn's disease (N=31). There were 40 men and 29 women. The results showed strong correlation between general and disease-specific quality of life in patients with IBD. There were no significant differences in measured variables between patients with ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease but there were significant differences in physical and mental component of the general HRQOL as well as in emotional and bowel symptoms of the disease-specific HRQOL between men and women with IBD. Women has expressed significantly lower level of the general and some aspects of disease-specific HRQOL.
