Resistance of green concrete to chloride ingress

Environmental protection and energy saving are crucial problems set up against today's cement industry. The use of industrial by-products such as silica fume, slag, lime and fly ash in the concrete as cement substitution reduce cement production, and consequently lower the CO2 emission and save energy. This concrete, so called “ green” concrete was tested in this research and compared to “ ordinary” , CEM II type of concrete. The aim of this research was to determine durability properties of “ green” concrete, especially resistance to chloride ingress. During this research three methods of chloride resistance testing were performed on three different types of concrete. First testing method was applied according to NT BUILD 443, which applies non-steady state chloride diffusion process. Second method was accelerated test method for non-steady state chloride ion migration coefficient, according to NT BUILD 492. Third method was performed according to ASTM 1202-97, which implies application of an electrical field for acceleration of chloride ions penetration. Results presented in this paper show comparison of chloride diffusion/migration coefficients of green concrete prepared with ternary blended cement and “ ordinary” concrete prepared with two different types of cement, as well as relationship between different test methods based on natural diffusion and on accelerated migration of chlorides into the concrete.
