Expert Systems and Automation Tools as Human Complements in High Risk Industries
Aviation is at the spearhead of the technology development. Humans have been considered superior to other live species on Earth. Aviation safety objective and indicators from accident and incident statistics have proven differently. Regardless of technological advancement there is still no risk free transportation. People are becoming the weakest link and one of the major causes for aviation incidents and accidents. Accepting and respecting that, when designing and utilizing transportation systems, should enable all involved to utilize their systems to the lowest risk possible. The paper presents an overview of influence that human psychology has on performance and errors in aviation and other high risk industries together with the way automation and expert systems try to complement them. It has been developed using deduction and analysis to present basic human psychology influence while induction and synthesis have been used to extrapolate information across other transportation industries outside the boundaries of aviation itself.
