Spherical model of interests in Croatia

Spherical model of interests is a new model of vocational interests' structure. The model was proposed by Tracey and Rounds (1996), and further developed by Tracey (1997 ; 2002). According to the spherical model there are 18 vocational interest types that are organized in a sphere. Eight interest types are placed on the equator of the sphere and five interest types on each of the hemispheres. The sphere is defined with three underlying dimensions: people-things, data-ideas and prestige. By now, the model was examined in US, China, Ireland and Japan. As it seems, model has shown cross-cultural validity and stability across gender, which was the major setback of earlier models of interests. The aim of this study is to validate the spherical model of in Croatia. The Personal Globe Inventory (Tracey, 2002), developed to measure interests according to the spherical model, was translated into Croatian and administered to samples of 437 primary school students, 540 secondary school students, and 630 university students. The validation of the spherical model was done with regard to age and gender of respondents. Internal consistency of all scales was confirmed. Three substantial dimensions were found to underlie the data, and their meaning mainly resembled the theoretical dimensions people-things, data-ideas and prestige. The spherical representation of 18 interest scales was also confirmed. According to the results, spherical model of interests was confirmed in Croatian samples. Croatian version of Personal Globe Inventory has shown its merit as a powerful tool for the interest assessment.
