Relation between different measures of career-related aspects: typical level of aspects, within-occupational aspects variance, and core aspects

Career-related aspects refer to various categories of vocational variables such as interests, values, preferences, abilities, or work roles. They can be used to characterise either individuals or career options in order to improve career decision making process. Aspects-based approach is new and eclectic way that takes in account different measures of career-related aspects. Typical level of aspects, within-occupational aspects variance and core aspects for an occupation should be identified to enhance the assessment of P-E fit. This paper focuses on relation among different characteristics of career-related aspects. The 120 most frequent occupations in Croatia are characterised by 31 career-related aspects (e.g. the advancement opportunities, expected salary, responsibility for others). Three independent experienced vocational psychologists have characterised all occupations by 31 aspects in three different ways. First they have estimated the typical level of each aspect for each occupation. Then they have identified the lowest and the highest level of each aspect within each occupation. Finally, they have chosen several aspects that are most representative for each occupation. According to this, all occupations were characterised by different measures of career-related aspects: typical level of aspects, within-occupational aspects variance, and a selection of core aspects. The relations between these different measures are discussed in the theoretical framework of Gati's aspect-based approach to person-environment fit.
