Prevalence of Helicobacter pylori infection of gastric mucosa stained by Giemsa method in patients with antral gastritis, and gastric and duodenal ulcer
During a six-month period, 141 patients were endoscopically examined. All patients underwent multiple biopsy of gastric mucosa histopathologically examined by hematoxylin-eosin staining, PAS with alcian blue, and Giemsa method. Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) was found in 67.6 % of patients with duodenal ulcer (n=34), 47.5 % of patients with gastric ulcer (n=46), and 47.5 % of patients with antral gastritis (n=61). There was no statistically significant difference in the prevalence of H. pylori infection among the three patient groups (p0.05). Dysplastic changes of the mucosal layer were detected in 26 out of a total of 141 patients, most of them in the gastric ulcer group. Pathohistologic examination of gastric mucosa ia a very useful tool in the detection of precancerous lesions. It is also highly sensitive in the detection of H. pylori infectio, thus being one of the standard procedures.
