The relationship between smoker prototypes, willingness and intention to smoke and smoking status among adolescents

Research has shown that prototypes and willingness to perform risky behavior plays a great role in adolescents` decision to start engaging in behaviors which are dangerous for their health, such as smoking – most popular risky health behavior among adolescents. This study explores adolescents` perception of smoker prototypes and differences between perceptions of smoker prototypes and subjects real and ideal self-images. The goal of this study was also to investigate the relationship between prototype of the smoker, willingness and intention to smoke and smoking status among 95 high school students aging between 15 and 19 years. The results show that 47% students never smoke, and that 53% students use cigarettes sometimes or every day. There are no gender differences in smoking, but there is a gender difference in the perception of smoker prototypes. The girls evaluate smoker prototype as more socially acceptable (for example more popular, more attractive). Smoker prototype does not represent goal state for adolescents because no differences between smoker prototype perception and perception of real and ideal self-images have been found. There is a difference between perception of real and ideal self-images. Students prefer having traits which are indicators of good accommodation and social acceptance. The results also show that only intention to smoke is a significant predictor of smoking status. Perception of smoker prototype and willingness to smoke are not significant predictors of smoking status which is contrary to our assumptions.
