Dynamics of biochemical mediators of inflammation in patients with acute ischemic stroke
The aim of the study was to assess the role of inflammation in the pathogenesis of acute ischemic stroke by measuring the levels of TNF-a, ICAM and interleukin-8 in serum and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of patients with acute ischemic stroke. Patients and methods: The prospective study included 23 stroke patients with first, CT verified acute ischemic stroke. Control group included 20 patients with other functional neurologic symptoms. Serum samples were obtained for analysis of TNF-a, ICAM and interleukin-8 on days 1, 3 and 12, and CSF was obtained on days 3 and 12 of the disease onset. The levels of biochemical markers of inflammation were measured by ELISA. Results: The levels of TNF-a, ICAM ad interleukin-8 on day 1 of the disease onset were significantly increased in serum and CSF of stroke patients as compared with the control group, and gradually decreased during the observation period. Conclusion: The results demonstrated changes in serum and CSF levels of TNF-a, ICAM and interleukin-8 in acute ischemic stroke to suggest the possible pathophysiological contribution of inflammation to the pathogenesis of ischemic stroke.
