Objectives. Motivation and weight loss expectations seem to be two psychological processes influencing the outcome of obesity management. The aim of this pilot study was to assess weight loss expectations and motivation using Foster's Goal Related Weight Questionnaire and a newly constructed questionnaire. Methods. Participants were 26 obese patients (14 men and 12 women), among them 13 seeking intragastric balloon treatment (IBT) for morbid obesity and 13 were treated for coronary heart disease (CHD), mean age 45.6± 11.2 years ; BMI of IBT patients = 37.3± 6.9 kg/m2 and CHD patients = 31.7± 2.3 kg/m2. Results. IBT patients had higher weight loss expectations than CHD patients (29.6± 12.0 kg vs. 13.4± 5.9 kg, t=4.37 ; p<0.001). Health concerns as primary motivation for weight loss were more common in CHD patients (76.9%) than IBT patients (30.8%). 61.5% of IBT patients and 77% CHD patients thought that the weight loss would have a strong positive influence on their health. IBT patients were more confident to lose weight than CHD patients (95.23% vs. 81.15% ; p<0.05). Among IBT patients 61.6% planned to lose weight a few weeks or a few months ahead, 23.1% less than one week ahead, and 15.3 didn’ t try. Among the CHD patients 15.4% planned to lose weight a few weeks or a few months ahead, 53.9% less than one week ahead, and 23.1% didn’ t try. Conclusion. CHD patient have more realistic weight loss expectations than IBT patients and more frequently reported health concerns as primary motivation for weight loss. The duration from thinking about weight loss to planning and then subsequently making the attempt is heterogeneous. These preliminary data show arbitrariness of the Prochaska and DiClemente stage of change definitions.
