The Role of Self-Efficacy and Health Locus of Control in Smoking among Health School Students
This study examines some of the constructs which were found to be good predictors of health behaviour. The focus was on smoking because research indicate that the approach and credibility of health care workers as treatment providers for smoking and tobacco related diseases may be influenced by their smoking habits. Participants were future health workers, 200 Health School students aged from 18 to 25 years. The differences in Multidimensional Health Locus of Control (MHLC) and General Self – efficacy (GSE) scales scores between smokers and nonsmokers were analyzed. Furthermore, it was examined how smokers in different stages of change of smoking behaviour differ in MHLC, GSE, Smoking Specific Self – efficacy (SSSE) and characteristics of smoking. The framework for discussing the results is the transtherotical model of change by Prochaska and DiClemente (1991).
