Differential predictors of specific affects in a representative sample of Croatian citizens

Many nation based surveys use measures of cognitive and affective components of subjective well-being. State approaches to measure positive and negative affects, rather than cumulative measures of hedonic balance have been reported. We gathered ratings on seven affect adjectives and examined their correlates with different behavioural variables used as predictors for each affect. We also examined work related variables as predictors in a workforce subsample. Subjects were a representative sample of Croatia citizens (N=1129). The best predictor of being happy were good health, opportunity to learn and time spent with friends. For being satisfied, the best predictors were less materialism, feeling trust, fairness and respect. In the workforce subsample less time spent commuting to work predicted being happy, while less job satisfaction predicted being sad and angry.
