Taxonomical study of Pseudo-nitzschia species in the eastern Adriatic Sea

Planktonic diatom species of Pseudo-nitzschia are common in oceanic and neritic plankton worldwide. Several species have been known as domoic acid producers, a neurotoxic amino acid responsible for Amnesic Shellfish Poisoning (ASP). The toxin-producing ability has generated considerable interest during the intense proliferation of Pseudo-nitzschia, due to the toxin accumulation throughout the food chain, impacting marine organisms, human health and economy. Among the 32 species of Pseudo-nitzschia described in the literature, eleven are known to be toxic. Thus, field studies elucidating nutrient and physical requirements, as well as biotic interactions of Pseudo-nitzschia at regional and global scales, are essential for the prediction and prevention of its mass occurrence and resulting toxicity. The difficulty in monitoring these diatoms is identification to the species level, which relies on ultrastructural features of cleaned frustules using electron microscope. Pseudo-nitzschia is a dominant diatom in the Adriatic Sea, but species composition is still unknown. P. calliantha was recorded so far in the Northern Adriatic (Gulf of Trieste), in the Middle Adriatic (Kaštela Bay, Zrmanja Estuary), as well as along the southern Italian Adriatic coast. In addition to P. calliantha, P. delicatissima was found in the southern Italian coastal Adriatic Sea. We present first more detailed taxonomic study on Pseudo-nitzschia species in coastal and offshore stations in Northern and Middle Adriatic Sea
